Acer Switch Alpha 12 SA5-271

Acer Switch Alpha 12 comes with specs such as 64-bit Windows 10 Home, a built-in kickstand in the 12.1-inch tablet with 2160 x 1440 resolutions and 3:2 aspect ratio, Intel HD Graphics GPU, 4GB to 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and storage ranging from 128GB, to 256GB, to 512GB. It also has a microSD card slot with support up to 128GB. Wi-Fi is complete, with support for dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, as well as Bluetooth 4.0. It has a 2MP front camera, a 5MP rear camera, Acer True Harmony audio stereo speakers, and both a USB 3.1 Type-C port and a USB 3.0 port. The battery life on the Acer Switch Alpha 12 is 8 hours, squeezed out of a 4870 mAh battery. This is a 2-in-1 and comes with the keyboard included, and is surprisingly comfortable. The keys have 1.4 millimeters of travel and require 58 grams of force to be pressed down. That results in clicky keys that have good feedback and are enjoyable to use. When propped up toward the screen, the backlit keyboard buckled slightly, but you won’t have this problem when you laid it flat. It also has support for the active digitizer Acer Active Pen, but the stylus is optional. The tablet weighs 900 grams and is 9.5 mm thick. Acer Switch Alpha 12 offers a lot of hardware for little money.

Acer Aspire Switch 12 S 2-n-1, 12.5" Full HD Touch, Intel Core m5, 8GB Memory, 32GB Storage, Windows 10 Home, SW7-272-M3UK

If you’re after a fanless-ultraportable these days and would prefer buying a computer that can actually handle multitasking decently well, you’ll have to go for one of the Skylake Core M offers available in stores right now. The slate is almost entirely covered in anodized aluminium, with only a few plastic strips at the top for the wireless antennas, but you’ll hardly notice them, as they blend well with the overall design. Acer went for a dark anodized finishing, which should face scratches well, but at the same time shows smudges and finger-oil easily and as a result, it’s rather difficult to maintain in pristine condition unless you wipe it off several times a day. That aside, the tablet feels solid in hand and doesn’t squeak or flex when grabbed firmly, and it’s fairly light as well (800 grams). But anyway, let’s turn our attention onto the dock. This one is well made on its own and fits the tablet perfectly. Notice it has a small dent in the middle, in order to leave a gap to grab the screen and lift-it up easily, a minor detail you’ll appreciate in everyday use. The dock and the tablets latch-up through a magnetic mechanism with zinc-alloy charging connectors, which means the keyboard-dock is powered by the slate and no physical connectors with fragile pins are required, plus the pins are reversible, so you can hook up the tablet with the screen facing towards you (in a laptop-mode) or away from you (in a presentation-mode). At the same time, latching and unlatching the two parts is helped out by the magnets and takes no effort at all to perform. Very well done here! The hinge is well designed too, solid, sturdy and able to lean back to about 170 degrees. At that point the ensemble is top-heavy, but that’s not designed for desk-use; however it’s going to be very useful for those of you who like to rest your computers on your thighs while working in bed or on a sofa. As for the other features, you’ll notice the speakers are on the front-face, under the screen and flanking the hinge in laptop mode, while on the back there are a multitude of lenses, as the Switch is one of the first devices to bundle an Intel RealSense Camera (a long range R200 camera, to be more precise). On the outside the Acer Aspire Switch 12S is a great device. It’s a bit larger and heavier than some of the other options out there, but at the same time feels solid in daily use, includes a well-designed hinge, front-facing speakers and a solid set of ports on the sides.

Lenovo ideapad Miix310

Sometimes, a little can go a long way. Whether you're a parent buying your child his or her first computer or you're looking for a secondary system for yourself, the Lenovo Ideapad Miix 310 is an affordable 2-in-1 that you can take anywhere. Though its keyboard layout is a little awkward and its screen is a bit too reflective, the Miix 310 offers value for the money. The Ideapad Miix 310's tablet display docks to the keyboard deck using two magnetic Pogo pin teeth. To detach the two parts, you need to grip and lift the tablet while holding the keyboard in place. This requires more force than we'd prefer, but it creates stability in the display that prevents it from wobbling during use. You can't attach the two halves in other positions, so you lose out on the tent and display positions offered by detachable such as the Acer Aspire Switch 10 E. The detached Miix 310 tablet weighs 1.3 pounds and measures 0.4 inches thin, which is similar to the Aspire Switch 10 E (1.4 pounds, 0.4 inches) and the Surface 3 (1.4 pounds, 0.3 inches). Lenovo placed the micro-USB 2.0, mini-HDMI and power ports on the right side of the tablet, where you'll also find its microSD card reader, and buttons for volume and power. Its USB 2.0 ports are found on the far corners of the left and right sides of the keyboard. Armed with an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor and 2GB of RAM, the Ideapad Miix 310 is fine for surfing the web or working with a couple of apps open, but it doesn't provide enough power for serious multitasking. Lenovo's hybrid stayed responsive when I split the screen between a YouTube video and five Chrome tabs, including a Google Doc, but you will notice significant slowdown when you added another four tabs. You can forget the Ideapad Miix 310's power cord if you're taking it out for a day of work. The 2-in-1 lasted a phenomenal 12 hours and 24 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits). That time outlasts the Pavilion x2 10t (9:33), the Aspire Switch 10 E (8:28), the Surface 3 (8:01) and the average ultraportable (7:49).
